SSU exposes assistant to MP on treason

As a result of a special operation in Kyiv, the SSU Counterintelligence detained an assistant-consultant to a people’s deputy of Ukraine. The official was a russian agent and carried out intelligence and subversive activities.

The agent’s handler was Dmitriy Zubarev, deputy head of the 9th Directorate of the Operational Information Department of the FSB’s 5th Service.

The traitor passed various intelligence to russians: on international cooperation, political course, strengthening the border with russia and the Anti-Terrorist/Joint Forces Operation in eastern Ukraine.

He received monthly payments from russian special services in the amount of USD 1,500 to 4,000. The ‘reward’ increased depending on the complexity of tasks and time to carry them out.

The investigation established that the official was recruited by Yuriy Vodolazkiy, a staff member of the 9th Directorate of the FSB’s 5th Service, during a trip to Moscow. Later, he handed the agent over to his manager.

To gather intelligence, the official used a wide range of personal contacts and his status of an assistant to the current member of parliament. To pass collected information, the spy used a channel of encrypted electronic communication.

More than once, the traitor met with his ‘supervisors’ on the territory of third states, where he received tasks and money.

The SSU notified the detainee of suspicion of a crime under Article 111 of the CCU (treason). The court has chosen detention as measure of restraint.

The pre-trial investigation has been completed; the case file has been submitted to court.

The operation was carried out by the SSU Counterintelligence Department together with the SSU Main Investigative Department.
